Construction Engineering Technology

Construction Engineering Technology

The use, interpretation and development of architectural computer-aided drafting is prevalent in the residential and commercial building industries. Computer drafting applications are also used extensively in the fields of civil engineering, architectural and various other engineering businesses. This certificate program covers the principles and use of software associated with developing this knowledge. It then extends the design specification considerations into theoretical knowledge and practical skills expected during the construction phase. Coverage includes construction planning, building codes and materials. Practical skills focus on the use of carpentry, structural (framing) work, and exterior and interior finish work, in addition to the use of tools and techniques related to carpentry.

Intended Learning Goals

Graduates of this program should be able to:
  1. Apply the theoretical principles of construction technology to solve practical construction problems;
  2. Demonstrate the use of cost effective, modern methods, technology and power tools to design and implement construction projects;
  3. Use trade appropriate methods and materials for construction plans and projects that meet applicable building codes and adhere to accepted, structurally-sound design elements;
  4. Understand and apply the methods and techniques of carpentry within the construction context, including structural framing and exterior and interior finish work; and
  5. Use technology for information, research and problem solving.
