Hospitality Courses Begin Jan. 18 in Berlin

Hospitality management courses are being offered this winter by the community and continuing education office at Wor-Wic Community College. Non-credit courses scheduled at the college’s Berlin-Ocean City Instructional Center in Berlin are designed to help students gain a better understanding of hospitality operations, including marketing, food service, bar and beverage management, and purchasing and menu planning.

“Bar and Beverage Management,” is being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 18 through April 26, from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m.

“Purchasing and Menu Planning for Profit” is being on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 19 through April 27, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

“Food Service Management” is being offered on Thursdays, Jan. 20 through April 28, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

“Hospitality Marketing” is being offered at the college’s Berlin-Ocean City Instructional Center, as well as the college campus on the corner of Route 50 and Walston Switch Road in Salisbury. The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 19 through April 27, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Scott D. Dahlberg of Snow Hill, department head and professor of hotel-motel-restaurant management, who has been at the college for 18 years, will teach the bar and beverage, marketing and food service courses. Dahlberg received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Duluth, his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul and his doctoral degree from the University of Maryland College Park.

The purchasing course will be taught by J. Thomas Robertshaw of Selbyville, Del. He has more than 20 years of experience in the food service industry, ranging from catering to executive chef. Robertshaw is a past president and current member of the board of directors of the Delmarva Chefs Association. Prior to entering the food service industry, he worked for 14 years as a stock broker and has experience in sales and management.
