January 29, 2007

Sharon K. Walsh of Eden, associate professor of English at Wor-Wic Community College, was selected to serve on the English composition task force in conjunction with the Maryland Partnership for Teaching and Learning, PreK-16.

The task force was formed to study and recommend changes to statewide English composition expectations at high school and college levels. The group will also study English composition in grades K-12 and recommend additional steps to help prepare students for introductory English composition at the college level.

Walsh, who has served for 10 years on the statewide standards for college writing committee for two-year schools, was one of four education professionals from Maryland community colleges chosen to serve on the task force. More than 30 administrators and educators from the department of education, public school system, high schools and four-year colleges and universities also serve on the college writing committee.

At Wor-Wic, Walsh teaches English as a second language, literature and introductory English classes. Throughout her 14 years at the college, she has been an advisor for Wor-Wic’s Alpha Nu Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the student-run newspaper, “The Wor-Wic Wave.” She is also a contributing writer of the Wor-Wic alma mater. Walsh is currently co-advisor of the arts club and a member of the developmental education committee at Wor-Wic.
