Wor-Wic Receives Largest Gift in 32-year History

Wor-Wic Community College received its largest gift in the college's 32-year history Wednesday, when an anonymous donor deeded an 18-hole golf course to the board of trustees.

The Ocean Resorts Golf Club, a 161-acre property with a clubhouse, cart shed, maintenance building and related equipment, located on Cathell Road in Berlin, was recently appraised at more than $3.3 million.

According to Dr. Ray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic, the college formed a limited liability company (LLC) to operate the golf course business as an auxiliary enterprise while the college begins to explore using the business for instructional purposes.

"Our priority right now is to hire some people quickly so we can get the golf course up and running for this year's season," Hoy explained. "Then, we can start looking at the golf course for academic applications."

Some academic possibilities mentioned by Hoy included internship opportunities for business and hotel-motel-restaurant management students, a place where students enrolled in pesticide safety courses could obtain practical experience and a location for an associate degree program in turf management.

"Turf management has been in our academic master plan since 2001," Hoy said.

"This unexpected, most generous gift is the perfect opportunity for us to begin exploring the feasibility of adding this degree. But right now," Hoy added, "we want to get the golf course open for business so that we can preserve the value of this gift. That¹s our number one priority at this time."
