Wor-Wic to Close Berlin Center
April 14, 2008
Wor-Wic Community College will be closing its Berlin-Ocean City Instructional Center, located off Route 50 in Berlin, on June 30.

The board of trustees recently decided not to renew the lease for the Berlin facility when it expires July 1, after learning of the proposed reduction of $250,0000 in state funding for the upcoming fiscal year.

“Wor-Wic has had a dedicated facility in Worcester County since 1977," said Dr. Ray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic, "and we have been at the present location for all but the first four years. We regret having to close this facility, but this action will enable us to save about $100,000 a year.

Hoy said that credit instruction at the Berlin location significantly declined after the college moved its hotel-motel-restaurant management program to the college campus last fall. Noncredit activity has been good, but it has not covered the cost of operating the center.

"We intend to continue offering classes in the community at various locations," Hoy added. "Hopefully, we will be able to find low cost locations convenient to Worcester residents all across the county."
