October 10, 2008

Allison Pilat of Berlin was recently selected to serve as the Wor-Wic Community College student representative to the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) Student Advisory Council (SAC).

In addition to serving as Wor-Wic’s student representative, Pilat was elected as chairperson of two-year colleges on the SAC.

The SAC was established in 1988 by the Maryland General Assembly to provide a forum for students to voice their concerns, perspectives and experiences of college life to MHEC.

An honors student with a 4.0 GPA, Pilat is majoring in both general studies and secondary education at Wor-Wic. She is president of Wor-Wic’s Alpha Nu Omicron chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. Pilat is also a member of the Future Educators of America and the Arts Club at Wor-Wic.

She is a part-time work study student for the honors program at Wor-Wic. And, she is a part-time supervisor of the audio-visual department at Seacrets in Ocean City.

“My experience at Wor-Wic has opened many opportunities to me to improve my leadership skills, my networking skills, and also provided me with many enrichment opportunities,” Pilat said.

Pilat plans to graduate from Wor-Wic in May 2009 and transfer to Salisbury University (SU). Although undecided about what she wants to major in at SU, Pilat is considering psychology, conflict resolution, and secondary education with a concentration in French.

“I want to go into the field of education, but I’m unsure of what I want to do there.” Pilat said. “I’m interested in counseling, teaching French and also being a researcher or advocate for alternative approaches to education.”
